Lazio vs Brescia
Lazio are set to play host to Brescia at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome on Wednesday, in a game that will be a part of the 37th round of the 2019/20 Serie A season. The contest means very little for either team at this point, with a Champions League spot for one and relegation for the other already mathematically confirmed.
LazioLazio looked to be right in the race for the title for a long spell this season, but their poor run of form since the Serie A restarted after the pandemic-imposed break saw them fall out of it completely. They enter this match sitting fourth with 75 points, the same as Atalanta in third and one less than Inter Milan in second. Juventus have already secured the throne for themselves again, with 83. Had Lazio been offered to finish in this position at the start of the campaign, most of their supporters would have probably been all for it, but now, after proving they could’ve done better, there is a smell of slight disappointment in the air.
Speaking of form, Simone Inzaghi’s team have won only two of their last six league encounters, drawing once and losing three times. However, those two wins came in the last two rounds, at home against Cagliari and away at Hellas Verona.
Team NewsInzaghi has no injury or suspension worries for this game after midfielder Manuel Lazzari served his one-match ban. Joaquin Correa is likely to join striker Ciro Immobile upfront, and wing-back Jordan Lukaku might return to the line-up after starting on the bench against Verona.
BresciaLazio’s end to the campaign may look as a disappointment, but the position Brescia are in just goes to show how everything is relative. With no more than 24 points from 36 games, Brescia have been relegated. Only SPAL with 20 stand below them in the table, and it remains to be seen if Lecce, at 32, will join them in the Serie B next season. In order to avoid it, Lecce have to find strength to win both of their remaining matches and hope Genoa, in 17th place with 36 points, don’t win either of theirs. A slim prospect indeed.
But back to Brescia, they’ve only returned to the Italian top flight last year and now their hopes of staying there are already over. In all honesty, the likelihood of going back down for them has always been relatively high, and they will have to settle for a chance to fight for promotion again in 2020/21.
Brescia’s recent form shows quite clearly how far out of their depth they’ve been, with one win and five defeats in their last six Serie A games. In fact, they’ve so far managed to win only six games in the whole campaign, three of which came in the opening five rounds, back in August and September last year. Since then, they’ve only beaten SPAL (twice) and Lecce.
Team NewsHead coach Diego Lopez won’t be able to count on Daniele Dessena for this match. The experienced midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season last time around, and Lopez might decide to give 19-year-old Mattia Viviani his third start of the campaign as a result.
ConclusionLazio maybe don’t need the points from this game, which can easily be said for Brescia as well, but the home team will certainly want to finish the season on a high and not to allow an already relegated team to walk away from their ground with anything in their pockets. Quite apart from that, Immobile has his own race to win as he battles five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo for the Golden Boot award. The 30-year-old has 34 goals to his name already, a truly superb output, with Ronaldo on 31, and Brescia at the moment seem the perfect opposition to add to his tally. It may be worth taking a punt on him scoring more than once.
